Prelude

A dark night at the end of summer, two travellers met close to the edge of a forest. One was young the other older though their ages were not easy to tell in the dark. One was dressed for battle, his shield and sword never far, the other was dressed in a flowing cloak and a hood hid his hair.
They spoke while they ate. The young warrior spoke of a quest; the older described it as a fool’s errand. The younger told of a legend, a powerful warrior, the older had heard of the story. Word travelled fast and rumours quickly became truth then soon after, legends.
They spoke of a man who had conquered death, a man like any other, but who had discovered the secret to eternity. The young warrior wanted to discover the same power, the older shunned the idea.
Their stalemate over this legend led the younger to be restless so the older offered to tell him the story; the story of the man who beat death.
The young warrior accepted.
Chapter One: Events beyond my control
Spoiler (cliquez pour afficher) Here I stand up in my tower,
Fatality’s not a factor.
My future is ahead of me.
I own my life, for I am free.
The air is rather cold up here but that’s the way I like it. It helps me think. Invigorates me, Clears my mind. The harsh roughness of the stone wall against my fingers reminds me that I’m alive and it’s moments like these that I live for. It’s only at times like these when I feel truly free. Only my imagination is the limit. Only this, and … Melody… can make me feel this way.
“Hello there…” I turned around startled, to find a young pretty girl looking at me. I must have been deep because I hadn’t heard her approaching. “Father is looking for you. You really need to go.”
“Thank you… I’ll leave soon.” She looked at me with that innocent smile again and said,
“I’ll catch up with you later”. Then turned around and walked out the stone door she’d come in from. “There goes my peace,” I exclaimed out loud, exasperated but ready to do my duty. I exhaled fully and took a final, deep breath of the cool moist air. A storm was brewing. Out in the distance I could see them there. Lots of them … Like vultures surrounding a wounded beast waiting for his fall so they can feast on his eyes while they’re still fresh. If now wasn’t the time, then it never would be. The sense of events beyond my control, slowly slotting into place, was ever more present and the feeling of fatality was overwhelming. A quick glance at the sun’s rays in the clouded sky told me it was late morning, and then, I too, turned away, and started the slow climb down to the main building.
